This morning woke up 05:30 and jumped on the van. We were all quite sleepy still so no big talks during the 60 km trip direction north. As it was planned we visited one hi-tech saw-mill. The roads were rather clean and the van was speeding up to 110 km/hrs.
I am always amazed by the fact here you can drive miles through the forests without crossing a single town. Sometimes it is scaring, specially when I am alone driving in the night. "What if" is always in my mind. But the landscape this morning was so breathtaking that I did not mind so much.
I was mostly impressed by harvesters (get some pics below). These monsters are able to log some 40 m3 of trees in one hour. I was really impressed. I stayed in the chilly air for almost one hour to see them at work. Like when I was a child spending afternoons watching caterpillars building up the roads near by my parents house.
Then hot coffe and fika and some .ppt presentation about the production flow and the tree species, basically pine and spruce and a little birch. We toured in the plant where everything is really high-tech. Machines are running almost by themselves, from debarking to ready slats.
Operators just check computers or play with joysticks, like in PS II. Amazing. The mill supply high quality wood for buildings industry and you would never guess major customers are Japanese! These evening I am planning a light dinner and a beer. They told me Eriksberg is also very good. Keep You posted.
See You.
